Wow. After the deep freeze we were in for the prior 3 days, it sure was nice to have a day like this one. The temperatures were in the high 20's with hardly a breath of wind.

We headed for P10 to ski the Centennial Bumps and work on speed control in the steeps. With lots of practice we developed the ability to engage the ski from the beginning of the turn. Also, we began to actively steer the ski. We did this by taking off one ski and practice doing "donuts" in the snow.
Keeping the outside hip over a very slightly edged ski we began to turn and skid the ski in an arc. Like Edison, we found a number of ways that didn't work, however everyone was able to complete the exercise. We took this on the mountain. The task after the exercise. "after the 3rd turn, maintain your speed at a constant rate. Regardless of the pitch. It took a days worth of practice, but the good news. Lots of success.

We also spoke about the Bamboo tree. It take 5 years for the Bamboo tree to sprout above the ground. And during that time it is easy for one to give up on it. However, on that 5th year it goes from spout to 80'+. Could you imagine what those that did not know what the Bamboo farmer was doing. They must think the farmer as crazy. But that is what it take. The Quantum Leap is simply a myth. Lasting success takes many many little steps. And to paraphrase Tom Watson of IBM, "to be a success, one must double the rate of failure".

As I may have mentioned somewhere, Babes on Bumps is not an officially sactioned program at Breck. My older brother teaches at Breck He tells me Breck is a real dicotomy ... really easy flat ego feeding terrain and some extremely steep difficult humble pie eating slopes... Which one were you on in the video?

Hugh, is your brother Kevin? I like K O' alot.
The runs with the babes were taken on Chair 6 on "Way Out". They are Black Diamond runs. One is pretty moderate, and the second is steep and funnels into a 2 ski length "throat".
The front and lower half of the peaks are pretty easy, the higher elevations and North and South sides of the mountain are steep black and double black. These videos are from the Upper-South side of the mountain.
