Feb 15 and 16, 2007 - Snow is Flying in Breckenridge

February 15 was nice. But with snow falling all night. It is really nice out now.
Thursday's snow was fun and deep in the windows!! Everywhere else the snow was good, although windblown and dense. Avis's Alley was soft, and the rest of the Northbowl was good by tricky.

I was skiing with James, Alex, and Katya. They were all very fun and spirited skiers. Alex had a number of breakthroughs. Going from stiff ankles to skiing Southern Cross and Contest Bowls pretty darn well. James had not done much powder skiing in the past. That is pretty much all we did on thursday. Instead of the pedaling action of the legs (downhill leg to release the edges), use more of pogo motion of the legs (upunweighting). Also, look for rises in the terrain for a place to "terrain unweight"'

The snow was AWESOME today. Up to 2+ feet in windblown spots. Very light. However, very windy on Friday. Lots of lift closures. It is still extremely windy as of 9:20pm. Snow and Blowing snow expected tonight. If we can get the wind to subside, and once Patrol can control the upper mtn, watch out! The snow is going to be extremely good! It will be very deep on south and east facing slopes. I can't wait.

Thank you Alex and Katya for joining me again for the lesson. I enjoyed watching both of you improve throughout the day. Pole swing taking you down the mountain versus across the mountain.

see ya, I'm going skiing
Jon

p.s. Saturday Feb 17. The wind has stopped. Big wind drifts. The upper mtn should be awesome. Wide skis will help.
