Fresh Snow Madness

When I tell old friends that I teach people to snowboard in Arizona, there is most always a pause. "It snows in Arizona?"Growing up in New Hampshire, I took many trips to visit Arizona, as my aunt raised her family in Lake Havasu. The memories I have are of a baking sun, scorched earth, and endless hours in the pool. Later in life, when my cousins attended NAU in Flagstaff, and I first heard that it snowed there, I was stunned. Years later, I find myself spending my days between nine and twelve thousand feet enjoying Arizona's alpine environment....

Heavy Snow in mid and late December opened the Arizona Snowbowl, and I was home. You can trust that I smile every day arriving at my "office," but mine is not the life of a "ski bum." To be able to pay the bills in this profession, students that return and place their faith and money in your hands are key. Developing these relationships takes time and a friendly disposition, but also a superior product to put out on the snow. And so this early season for me so far has been about preparing for my level 2 certification. ...
